Down Under Economic Conference 1994

In 1994 I chaired the First Golden Gate University "Down Under Conference on Privatization." This conference brought together academics and business leaders to discuss privatization. New Zealand was then regarded as the "test tube" for the transfer of public assets to the private sector. The conference produced lively debate and controversy. The Australian and New Zealand consulates in California strongly supported this project. Significant support was also received from their respective commercial chambers. The timeliness of this event has been underscored by the current escalation of privatization in Australia (and around the world) and in the context that it is taking place under a Labor Party government (see also my notes on the Australian Two Airline Policy and Water Privatization Study).

I am currently putting together a follow-up conference in conjunction with APIU. This conference will be in late 1995 or early 1996. Basically, this will be a status and impact analysis of the current process, with emphasis on continuing investment opportunities. Please let me have your input regarding possible topics for this conference.

1995 Swim Symposium at San Francisco Olympic Club

In May of 1995, I chaired a swim symposium at the San Francisco Olympic Club covering (1) History of Swimming, (2) Current Training Techniques, emphasizing the new Australian "quality v quantity" (race pace) approach, and (3) The Doping Situation, with particular emphasis on the concerns emanating from the sudden dominance of the Chinese women's swim program.

The keynote speaker at this symposium was legendary Australian swim coach Forbes Carlile. Other great coaches in attendance were Peter Daland (U.S.A.), Ursula Carlile (Australia), George Haines (U.S.A.), Cecil Colwin (South Africa and Canada), Nort Thornton (U.S.A.). In terms of focussing on the difficult doping situation in sport, particularly women's swimming, Forbes described this symposium as a watershed event. Video tapes of this seminar may be obtained (PAL/NCTS) from Video Conversions at 415-771-0272.
